Carmina Burana — National Opera & Ballet of Ukraine, Odesa

The National Opera and Ballet of Ukraine from Odesa brings Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana to the Netherlands in a staged production combining orchestra, choir, vocal soloists and ballet. More than a hundred performers take part in a work whose forceful rhythms and massed voices are familiar even to listeners encountering the complete piece for the first time.

The cantata draws on medieval poems about the changing wheel of fortune, love, desire and the uncertainty of life. Its famous opening, O Fortuna, frames a sequence of contrasting scenes: exuberant celebrations, intimate moments and reminders that happiness and power can disappear as quickly as they arrive.

Igor Chernetsky conducts, with choreography by Gerard Mosterd and video design by Sibe Kokke. Dance and projections add a visual interpretation to the live score, so the evening can appeal to audiences interested in theatre and ballet as well as choral and orchestral music.
