Heritage on Trial: Can International Law Still Protect What War Destroys?

A Hague Justice Week panel on protecting Ukraine’s cultural heritage, accountability and recovering stolen cultural objects.

About this event

Heritage on Trial examines what happens when cultural heritage is damaged, destroyed or looted during war, and how international law can respond. Taking Russia’s war against Ukraine as its context, the discussion focuses on protecting museums, churches, libraries, archives and the cultural objects they preserve.

Ukrainian officials, international legal experts and cultural heritage professionals will discuss protection, prosecution of crimes against heritage and the recovery of stolen objects. The Embassy of Ukraine in the Netherlands organizes the event with the British Embassy, supported by the Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder Foundation, as part of The Hague Justice Week. Individual speakers are not named in the registration information.

The event takes place on 17 November 2026 at Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder, Lange Vijverberg 15, 2513 AC Den Haag. Doors open from 09:30 to 10:00; the panel runs from 10:00 to 12:00.
