Silent Witnesses — burned Ukrainian books
An ongoing exhibition at Oekraïense Club in Zaandam, presenting burned Ukrainian books as witnesses to the destruction of culture, education and memory.
About this event
Silent Witnesses brings burned Ukrainian books into a community space in Zaandam. The display includes children’s books and school textbooks whose damaged pages make the consequences of attacks on publishing and education tangible. Visitors encounter objects that once carried stories and knowledge and now also bear physical traces of destruction.
Oekraïense Club presents the exhibition as an invitation to reflect on cultural memory, identity and the future of Ukrainian books. Its focus extends beyond damaged objects to the people who continue to write, publish, teach and read. The organiser welcomes anyone interested in Ukraine, culture and freedom of expression.
The exhibition is already open and runs from 3 October through 3 November 2026 at Oekraïense Club, Rozengracht 6–8, 1506 SC Zaandam. The opening ceremony has passed; this listing concerns the remaining exhibition period. Visits take place during the club’s opening hours, rather than at a single performance time.
The confirmed calendar for 13–18 October lists opening hours of 13:00–17:00 and explicitly says the exhibition can be visited during those hours. Later weeks may differ: check the club’s latest calendar before travelling. The original opening announcement stated free entry; the current calendar does not give a separate exhibition charge or booking link. Guided tours, display languages and specific accessibility arrangements have not been confirmed.
