Kyiv’s Sophia Chamber Choir brings Spiegel im Spiegel to the annual peace concert organised by Raad van Kerken Zaltbommel. Led by Oleksii Shamrytskyi, the ensemble returns to the town after an earlier Christmas concert, this time performing in the Sint-Maartenskerk. The evening combines choral listening with a collection in support of people affected by the war in Ukraine.
The organiser describes the programme as a musical mirror. Renaissance madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi open a journey through the harmonies of Josef Rheinberger and Johannes Brahms towards Arvo Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel at its centre. The second half reflects back through contemporary sacred music by Kim André Arnesen and Pärt’s Virgencita before returning to Monteverdi. The emphasis is on connections between sound, stillness and expression rather than a chronological survey of music history.
