40 Years after Chornobyl — ENFF panel
An English-language conversation with filmmakers and an artist about Chornobyl, memory, truth and its continuing relevance to Ukraine. Free with reservation.
About this event
Forty years after the Chornobyl disaster, its effects remain visible in landscapes, personal lives and debates about nuclear energy and state secrecy. This Eastern Neighbours Film Festival panel examines how the catastrophe is remembered, what has been forgotten and how documentary cinema can bring experiences into view that official accounts leave out.
The discussion also connects that legacy to present-day Ukraine, where another war has again placed Chornobyl in the international spotlight. It asks what personal testimony and moving images can contribute to questions of truth, responsibility and environmental catastrophe, making the session relevant to audiences interested in film, history and the politics of memory.
The guests are Lyuba Knorozok, producer of Special Operation; Kristina Mikhailova, director of River Dreams; and visual artist and researcher Äsel Kadyrkhanova. The conversation is in English, without subtitles. The programme runs for approximately 60 minutes; the booking system schedules the session from 19:45 to 20:51 on 7 November.
The venue is Zaal 6, Boutique Cinema, at Filmhuis Den Haag, Spui 191, 2511 BN The Hague. Admission is free, but a ticket must be reserved in advance. This is a discussion, separate from the festival’s film screenings. Contact the box office if you need a wheelchair space.
